Land use in acid sulphate soils degrades river water quality – Do the biological quality metrics respond?

چکیده

Land use in the Acid Sulphate (AS) soils induces metal and acidity pollution of aquatic ecosystems coastal areas worldwide. Increasing utilization AS poses increasing risks for deterioration water bodies. We studied effects coverage soils, together with other catchment land cover attributes, on assemblages fish, diatoms benthic invertebrates 42 sites along 15 lowland rivers Finland during three subsequent years. Low pH content several metals river were related to high amount catchment. Especially iron color correlated forested catchment, whereas lower values higher arsenic, chromium concentrations associated wetlands. The assemblage structure all biological groups was strongly spatially structured among varied less temporally. spatial fish affected by acidic water, more low alkalinity organic matter iron. invertebrate bioassessment metrics demonstrated soil induced degradation responding acidity, while response from index weaker. alone did not seem add biometrics without further increase acidification. Our results highlight importance recognizing target mitigation effects. A holistic approach adverse is needed, using methods directing main efforts protection human disturbance highest proportion soils. suggest that status assessment should be based multiple quality elements their could improved better detection impacts pressures. examined.

Land use impacts on surface water quality by statistical approaches

Surface waters are the most important economic resource for humans which provide water for agricultural, industrial and anthropogenic activities. Surface water quality plays vital role in protecting aquatic ecosystems. Unplanned urbanization, intense agricultural activities and deforestation are positively associated with carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous related water quality parameters. Multip...

Assessing the Impact of Land Use Practices on Water Quality in the Kentucky River Drainage Basin

Recently, many publications have explored the utility of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote-sensed imagery to approximate the regional causes of water pollution (Basnyat 1999; Basnyat 2000; Griffith 2002). In such studies, water pollution data is placed in a geographic context to see what generalizations can be made about the impact of regional land use practices on water quality. ...

Water Quality and Land Use Changes in the Alafia and Hillsborough River Watersheds, Florida, Usa

Spatial distribution of land use can have a substantial effect on surface and groundwater quality. Our objective was to test for trends in flow components and water quality related to changes in land use in the Alafia and Hillsborough River watersheds in Florida, USA, over the period 1974-2007. In addition, water quality statistics were evaluated in the perspective of numeric water quality crit...

Assessment of water quality in Blinaja River Basin (Kosovo) using the Canadian Water Quality Index (WQI)

Kosovo has limited natural water resources which should be well managed. This is recently realised through quantitative and qualitative monitoring of both surface and groundwater and by characterizing their quality according to their destination. In this paper, the Water Quality Index (WQI) developed by the Canadian Council of Environment Ministers (CCME WQI) was applied to evaluate the groundw...

Water quality in the upper Han River basin, China: the impacts of land use/land cover in riparian buffer zone.

Vegetated riparian zones adjacent to rivers and streams, can greatly mitigate nutrients, sediment from surface through deposition, absorption and denitrification, yet, human activities primarily land use practices have dramatically reduced the capacity. In this study, 42 sampling sites were selected in the riverine network throughout the upper Han River basin (approximately 95,200 km(2)) of Chi...
